Natascha Petrinsky is a veritable Wonder Woman as the warrior queen, a role that demands Valkyrian vocal heft. The tessitura is split between extremes: the mezzo hunkers down around her throaty low A to belt out orders, leaping to brassy top notes as she advances into the fray. Petrinsky affectingly bares her character’s vulnerable side after Achilles abandons Penthesilea, delivering a Monteverdian lament in keening phrases that disintegrate into stuttering and hyperventilation.
